You need a boost leak tester that fits your turbo inlet, an air compressor with a regulator, and a spray bottle with soapy water. Pressurize the system to about 10-15 psi and listen for hissing. Check intercooler couplings, intake manifold gaskets, and the throttle body shaft seals first. If you hear a leak but cannot find it, spray the soapy water over each joint and watch for bubbles. Do not exceed the rated pressure of your intercooler or intake piping.
Wastegate preload sets how much boost pressure is required to start opening the wastegate. More preload means the wastegate opens later, which raises boost. Less preload lowers boost and can cause boost creep if the wastegate opens too early. Use a hand pump with a pressure gauge connected to the actuator to measure the crack pressure. Adjust the rod length until the actuator starts moving at the boost level your tune expects.
Boost creep happens when the wastegate cannot bypass enough exhaust gas, so boost keeps climbing past the target. This is common with large turbos, free-flowing exhausts, or wastegate ports that are too small. Check the wastegate flapper for proper seating and measure actuator travel. If the flapper does not fully open, the port may need enlarging or the actuator rod may be too short. Boost spiking, on the other hand, is usually a control issue, not a mechanical one.
Intercooler efficiency is the difference between the air temperature entering the core and the temperature leaving it, divided by the temperature rise from ambient. A good core should recover 70-85% of the temperature drop. Measure inlet and outlet temps with thermocouples while driving under load. Also watch pressure drop across the core; anything above 2-3 psi at full boost means the core is too restrictive for your setup.
Start with the fuel and ignition tables before touching boost. Log air-fuel ratio, knock correction, and intake air temperature on a few pulls. Adjust the fuel map in small increments, then move to ignition timing. Only raise boost after the base maps are stable. Keep a log of every change so you can revert if something goes wrong. If you are not confident reading knock counts, find a tuner who can review your logs before you push further.
