How do I find a boost leak without a smoke machine?
Wastegate preload sets how much boost pressure is needed to start opening the wastegate. More preload means the gate opens later, which raises boost. Less preload lowers boost and can cause boost creep. Use a hand pump with a pressure gauge to measure actuator opening pressure, then adjust the rod length to hit your target.
What does wastegate preload actually do to my boost curve?
Measure intake air temperature before and after the intercooler with a pair of thermocouples, and log pressure drop across the core at the same time. A good street intercooler should keep pressure drop under 1.5 psi at your power level. If you see more than that, the core is too restrictive for your setup.
